Discover the Clachans of Glenarm Tour
Prepare to be bewitched by the forgotten tales of former rural settlements, with tour guide Seamus Milliken, on a trek through Clachans Cruck and Cullyvully
In times gone by, land and community was central to life for residents in the Glens of Antrim, as they came together to live and work in small settlements called clachans. This rugged, untamed land had to be mastered by hand and beast to cultivate the farmland we know today.
Join your local tour guide Seamus Milliken, on an exclusive walking tour through private land to discover two of three ruined clachans located in the townland of Mullaghsandall in Glenarm – Cruck and Cullyvully – reminders of long forgotten small villages and settlements.
Walk in the shoes of the fascinating families who occupied the clachans during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, unearth the stories behind the people and discover the reasons for the rise and fall of these clachans, which have been uninhabited since the1960’s. Find out why Cullyvully clachan is often known as ‘Back of the Hill’ and hear all about their great community spirit, when neighbours worked together and helped each other out.
With Seamus you will traverse a variety of different terrains, taking in the beautiful landscape around the Glens of Antrim and experiencing the natural aspects of the countryside whilst getting a feel for rural life in the area.
